What is an induction loop?

Most Induction Loop Systems or AFILS, (Audio Frequency Induction Loop System) will work with modern hearing aids, both NHS issue or privately purchased, even non digital hearing aids are likely to be compatible.  Induction Loops use a magnetic coupling between the amplifier electronics and a pick-up in the hearing aid.  An input to the amplifier from a microphone or music source for example is converted to an electromagnetic signal and passed through the loop, the coil in the hearing aid collects this signal and converts it and amplifies it for the wearer.  The pick-up is referred to as a "Tele-coil" because it was originally developed to pick up the magnetic field generated by coils in a telephone. Hence the signs advising hearing aid users carry a letter "T" , and the switch position on the hearing aid is marked by the letter T.

A coil of wire is laid around the room to be served by the induction loop, and driven by a power amplifier as if it were a loudspeaker.

Other methods of sending this signal are available, and Abacus Solutions can provide alternatives such as Infra-red systems or Wireless FM systems, the wireless systems are particularly successful for Churches and the Tourist industry.

Where are induction loops installed?
The Disability Discrimination Act (1995) makes it a legal duty for all organisations who provide services to the public to make reasonable adjustments to make their premises accessible for people with disabilities, this includes people with a hearing impediment.
